The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution

From 1964 onwards, the United States started to play an even more important role in the Vietnam War, directly engaging in it. This was the result of a confrontation between the United States and North Vietnam known as the Gulf of Tonkin incident.

On 2nd of August, 1964, a US warship was performing a patrol in the waters of the Gulf of Tonkin, located off the coast of North Vietnam. The warship was allegedly pursued by three North Vietnamese Navy boats. The commander of the US warship requested air support from a US aircraft carrier. A sea battle ensued in which the US warship fired warning shots, followed by the North Vietnamese boats attacking with torpedoes and machine gun fire.
