A Midsummer Night's Dream - Short summary
A Midsummer Night’s Dream takes place in Athens. It all begins with Theseus, the Duke of Athens, and his future wife Hippolyta, who are planning their marriage, and a large festival in the same matter. Therefore everything had to be perfect – harmonic and problem-free, but it’s not. Love is not always as simple as it should be. There’s a big drama about love – Egeus wants Theseus to solve the problem between Hermia, her beloved Lysander and her suitor Demetrius. Egeus, the father of Hermia, wants Hermia to marry Demetrius, the man who has Egeus’ love, but Hermia refuses to marry him because she’s in love with Lysander, who is also in love with her. Therefore Egeus only sees one solution, to punish Hermia with death if she refuses to obey.
Theseus agrees that her duty is to obey her father but gives her a third possibility – entering a nunnery or as her father said, Demetrius or death. She gets until the big wedding day to make her decision.
Hermia and Lysander do not agree with the decision but Egeus has the law on his side, so there is nothing they can do about it – except to run away into the forest where the laws of Athen don’t apply and that is their plan.
