In this section, we will give you some suggestions of things you might want to comment upon and discuss regarding John F. Kennedy’s "Ich bin ein Berliner" speech. Remember that you should always argue for your opinion and avoid making emotional and personal claims.

An interesting thing you might want to focus on is the reference to the Latin phrase “civis Romanus sum” (l. 12), which Kennedy mentions as the proudest boast of a Roman citizen 2000 years ago. The phrase is found in a series of speeches made by Cicero in 70 BC and it refers to the legal rights of a Roman citizen. For instance, when traveling through the Roman Empire, each citizen who declared “civis Romanus sum” was granted safety.
