Jean Louise Finch, nicknamed Scout, is the narrator of the book, and by this we get a little girls view of everything going on in Maycomb. Scout is, however, very intelligent, and can read and write before going to school. She is also very thoughtful, and as a child, already doubts of the goodness in man. 

Scouts mother is dead, and Scout lives with her brother and father. Scout is a tomboy because of the way Atticus has raised her. She doesn’t wear dresses, but plays “boy-games” with Dill and Jem, is very sure of herself...
